Nestled in the old Stonetown area (Mkomani) of Lamu, Umma House has recently been meticulously restored, with attention to detail and quality.
Mkomani is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as it possesses all the Swahili characteristics which helped it gain this status – narrow streets, and Swahili architecture such as carved doors and decorative plasterwork.
Umma House is a tasteful fusion of the new and the old - typical Swahili architecture is combined with modern additions – the carved wooden entrance door opens into an interior courtyard, where there is a dining area and swimming pool with bar, framed by a wall of traditional zidakas (decorative plaster niches typical of Swahili architecture). The terrace which overlooks the swimming pool is a perfect place for reading, relaxing or taking a siesta, cooled by ceiling fans.
The first floor houses a twin bedroom, with windows overlooking the courtyard. It also contains a dressing room with bathroom leading off. There is also a double room on this floor, with a large double bed and bathroom.
The stairs then take you up to a private terrace, which overlooks the historical area of Lamu.
The second floor contains a suite, which is furnished with a double bed, open traditional arches, a private terrace which overlooks the courtyard, and a spacious bathroom.
The rooftop terrace is another of the delights to be found in this house, where you can relax on a traditional Swahili bed supported by comfortable cushions, and watch the traditional wooden dhows sailing on the ocean, or the numerous Lamu cats stretched out asleep on a Lamu roof.
To complete the ambience, your dedicated house steward will light candles on the rooftop terrace while you enjoy the sunset, maybe with a glass of wine.
Umma House benefits from a fully equipped kitchen, which is where your house steward will prepare your breakfast of fresh fruit and juices, eggs, toast and hot tea and coffee, and where you can cook your own meals during the rest of the day.
Umma House sleeps up to six people. Also included in the price are linen and airport transfer.
The house benefits from a solar hot water system if you want a hot shower, and a power back-up system of electric batteries, in the unlikely event of a power cut.
