In the heart of Lamu old town, Mwenye Amin house is a tastefully restored swahili house, a 2 mins walk from the jetty and seafront.

The house is thought to be over 250 years old. It once belonged to the Al-Bakry family, one of the ruling families in Lamu. Keeping to the original design, the house has retained its “harmonious irregularity” and much of its old soul and character. Its massive coral walls, high ceilings, inner courtyards and large open galleries make the house cool, light and airy. The furnishing is the creation of a local artist, recycling old dhow wood.

The house comfortably sleeps 4 adults and 2 childeren: two double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and a third sleeping area, close to the master bedroom, ideal for smaller children. The house is rented out on a bed and breakfast basis and has a cook / house attendant, who can also prepare lunch and dinner on request.

At Mwenye Amin we want to be as eco-friendly as possible: we encourage the cook to recycle and compost. Kindly respect and encourage those house rules. Also, we have consciously avoided flush toilets while restoring the old bathrooms.
